So you’ve been accepted to the school of your dreams and are ready to start thinking about move-in day. The overachiever in all of us wants to start planning for the first day of classes, but September’s a ways away, and you still have the rest of senior year and summer to enjoy. In that time, I want to pass on some knowledge to you–things I wished I knew when shopping for my first year. We all know the basics: mini fridge, kettle, printer, etc., but I’m going try to share some of the overlooked items that will help make your first year a little more comfortable, and entertaining.
Imagine this scenario: you wake up at 7:45 for your 8:00am, you brush your teeth and get dressed in your finest sweats and rush out to just make your class in time. Ten minutes into the class, you realize you are still half asleep, and then totally zone out for most of the lecture; you forgot your morning caffeine fix. Avoid this situation by having either of the aforementioned appliances just steps from your bed. So right when you wake up, you can begin brewing your favourite coffee or tea, and by the time you finish getting ready, your beverage will be ready to go. Be sure to pick up your brew of choice in bulk at Costco beforehand as well.
Bonus tip: Pick up a nice portable mug to take your brew of choice with you to classes and library study binges.
The perfect combination of a comfy slipper and shower shoe. This revolutionary piece of footwear can be worn around the dorm, into your dingy communal bathrooms, or even outdoors for quick trips to Tim’s, to take out the trash, or, if you’re feeling whimsical, even the library. Crocs are durable, and comfy, what more can you ask for in a house shoe. Be sure to pick one up in an obnoxiously loud neon colour–it’s a great way to make friends.
3. String Lights/LED strip lights
Around the half-way mark of your first semester, you may see through all your photo collages and posters and realize how depressing your dorm room actually is. The fluorescent lighting and shorter days don’t help either. Try adding some flare to your room by getting some cooler lights to really set the mood. If your personality calls for a rustic hipster vibe, string lights might be your best bet, but if your personality calls for a techno or psychedelic vibe, remote controlled LED strip lights may be your best bet. Any of the types of lighting, or any other type of interesting lighting will help you through some of those rough late night study binges.
4. Oil Diffuser
Let’s face it, you stink! Just kidding, it may just be your floor-mates. Nevertheless, you need a means to keep your surroundings fresh, and an oil diffuser is the new way to do this. It adds a fresh scent in a much more natural vapour form, instead of a harsh chemical heavy spray. This will also help cope with the stress of having to finish 3 essays in a week because you’ve been binge watching Friends or The Office. These don’t go for too much, and some also have an LED light, to add even more aesthetic to your room. Stock up on some oils to match the seasons, to make your room even more festive.
